African jewelry, woven by hand from raffia and made in Nigeria. Raffia is the fibre of the raffia palm: stripped, dried, hand-dyed, then coiled and woven by hand, one row at a time. Nothing here is moulded or machine-pressed.

Why raffia

Scale without weight. A disc or a bell this size in metal would pull at the lobe all evening. Raffia weighs close to nothing, so the size stays the statement and the weight never becomes the problem. Every pair hangs from stainless steel ear wires.

The shapes

Each shape is its own piece: a half-moon on a long braided cord, a woven bell, an oversized disc with a dyed fan at its centre, a tiered basket, and a coiled teardrop. The colour is carried by the fibre itself rather than printed on it, so no two pieces are shaded exactly alike.

Wearing them

Hair up or swept back, so the piece has room to move. They were made to be worn against print — try them with a hand-dyed Adire dress or a matching set.

Care

Keep dry. Raffia is a plant fibre — water, perfume and hairspray will dull the colour. Store flat or hanging, not crushed at the bottom of a bag. If a piece flattens, press it gently back into shape with your fingers; the fibre has memory.
