Most styling advice about statement earrings assumes you are wearing something plain. Put on the little black dress, add the big earrings, done. It is easy advice because the outfit is doing nothing.
Hand-dyed African print is not doing nothing. An Adire pattern has its own rhythm, its own irregularity, its own colour story. So the real question is not “which big earrings do I wear”. It is how do you add a second loud thing without the two of them arguing.
Here is how we do it.
The rule that does most of the work
Pick the earring colour from inside the print, not next to it.
An Adire piece is rarely one colour. Look closely at an indigo dress and you will find warm ochres in the resist lines; look at a batik print and you will find a second colour hiding in the pattern. Choose an earring in a colour that is already in the cloth and the two stop competing. The earring reads as part of the outfit rather than a decision made on top of it.
The failure mode is choosing a colour that is merely “nice with” the print. That is when you look accessorised instead of dressed.
Scale: let the neckline decide
Not the earring. The neckline.
- A high or covered neckline (a boubou, a kaftan, a shirt set) leaves the whole space between jaw and shoulder empty. That is where a long piece belongs. A half-moon on a long cord falls to about the collarbone and fills that space without touching the garment.
- A halter or an open neckline already has a strong line running up to the neck. A long earring will cross it and both will lose. Go wide and high instead: an oversized disc sits close to the face and stays above the neckline entirely.
- A busy bodice (gathered, tiered, printed edge to edge) wants something compact with a clear silhouette. A woven bell has one shape and one colour, and it holds up against a lot of pattern.
Hair up, almost always
This is the least glamorous rule and the most reliable one.
A large woven earring needs room to move. Hair down absorbs it: half the piece disappears, the other half catches on the braid. Hair up, swept to one side, or pulled back at the nape gives the earring the space its size was designed for. If you are wearing your hair down anyway, size down. That is the day for the tiered basket.
Then stop
Statement earrings are a complete accessory decision. Once they are on, the necklace is finished: either skip it entirely, or keep it to a fine chain that sits well below the earring’s lowest point. Bracelets and rings are fine; they are in a different visual zone. A second statement at the throat is not.
The same goes for the bag. If the earrings are woven, a woven bag turns the outfit into a theme. Pick one texture and let leather or plain canvas carry the rest.
Four outfits, worked through
A hand-dyed maxi dress, indigo, halter neckline. The print is blue and white with warm undertones. Go for the amber teardrop. It pulls the warmth out of the resist lines and sits high, clear of the halter. Hair up. Nothing at the throat. Browse the dresses and skirts.
A boubou or kaftan, covered, floor-length. The most forgiving canvas in the wardrobe, and the one that can take length at the ear. A half-moon on a long cord, a flat metallic sandal, and nothing else. More on this in how to style a boubou dress, and the pieces are in kaftans and boubous.

A jumpsuit with an open back or a cutout. The garment already has its statement, and it is not at the ear. Keep the earring compact and let the cut do the talking. The jumpsuits were designed with the neckline empty on purpose. Our guide to the Adire jumpsuit goes further.
Why raffia specifically
Because scale is only free if the weight is.
A metal earring this size pulls at the lobe, and you take it off before the evening is over. Woven raffia weighs almost nothing, so you can wear something genuinely large from morning to the end of the night and forget it is there. The ear wires are stainless steel, which matters if you have ever had a reaction to cheap findings.
